What actually works for you to prevent seasickness?
Posted by Phaedra on July 8, 2025 at 10:56 amHas anyone else get seasick on calm days? How do you handle it?
Does seasickness get better with experience, or is it just luck of the draw?

I am a big believer of watching the horizon, being able to see land and keep you eyes there. I was once sailing from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale with 15′ swells at night. It was the only thing I could do to not get super sick. I have also recently used the ReliefBand- game changer!!!

I’ve never had to take patches even though I am usually pretty sensitive when it comes to headaches and migraines. I even get motion sickness in cars. If I’m in the passenger seat, however I don’t get seasick if I do the following things: stay very hydrated, stay in the center of the boat, Keep my eye on the horizon, and don’t go down below if I’m feeling a little nauseous.

I sail on some pretty choppy waters in San Francisco, so staying on the deck and keeping my eyes on the horizon are essential. A sailor should always be scanning for traffic and weather, so in general a good idea not to keep your eyes fixed on anything / anyone on the boat.
Staying away from the bow, as it bounces more and limiting time below also help. If someone is really seasick, I put them on the helm. Also, never show up hungover and expect not to feel an extra urge!
