North U’s Women’s Performance Racing Week

North U Women’s Performance Race Week is a week-long sailing program designed specifically for women. North U offers various programs and resources to help sailors improve their skills and performance. This racing program is different because it is designed specifically for women.

During North U Women’s Performance Race Week, participants receive coaching and instruction from experienced sailors and coaches, and they can practice their skills in various racing situations. The program covers a wide range of topics, including sail trim, boat handling, tactics, strategy, and more.

The program provides a supportive and empowering environment for women to improve their sailing abilities and connect with other female sailors. The requirements include strong sailing skills, some racing experience, and the ability and agility to sail on an active 24-foot boat. The program occurs at St. Petersburg Sailing Center in St. Petersburg, Florida.

What is Included:

Experience a five-day intensive training program to refine and enhance your racing skills with North U’s Performance Racing Week. This program offers a blend of onboard coaching, seminars, and video analysis to help you become a better sailor. The event culminates with a championship regatta that tests your skills.

Throughout the program, you’ll have access to more than 27 hours of sailing and participate in over fifty starts. A skilled coach will join you onboard as you sail a J70, one of the most popular one-design race boats in use today. You can enroll as an individual or as part of a team.

Daily Schedule:

Prepare yourself for a full five days of intensive learning as The Clinic offers a daily schedule of six hours of sailing, a midday seminar, and a lunch break. The afternoon session concludes with either a video review or a party (or both) to celebrate your progress.

With 30 hours of sailing and over 50 starts, The Clinic is designed to help you improve your sailing skills. In case of unfavorable weather conditions, the program offers informative shore sessions on various topics such as Rig Tuning, Rules at Starts and Marks, Crew Organization and Communications, Self-Directed Practice Planning, and more to keep you engaged and on track with your progress.

January 2024 Sailor of the Month: Gabriele Grant

This month we were inspired by Gabriele Grant’s story and she is our January 2024 Sailor of the Month. Gabriele is one of our younger American Sailing certified sailors — but has quite a story to tell already. At age 18 she has already been sailing for 7 years, and has a cohort of peers who share much of her journey. It’s exciting to see the next generation of sailors enjoying the sport and taking their education and skill development seriously while developing life-long relationships from their shared memories on the water. Gabriele’s favorite place to sail is New York Harbor, from her base at the Manhattan Yacht Club in Liberty Landing Marina, where she has studied with Manhattan Sailing School.

October 2023 Sailor of the Month: Elizabeth Henderson

This month we were inspired by Elizabeth Henderson’s story and she is our October Sailor of the Month. She hails from San Francisco, CA, and in only fifteen months, she has taken ASA certifications 101, 103, 104, 105, 106, 114, 118, 107, and 108 with Puget Sound Sailing School and Modern Sailing in Sausalito, CA. Truly her spirit has been captured by the call of the sea. It might be said that Elizabeth’s story is what every sailor dreams of encountering each time we cast off the lines. She tells it all here in the latest episode of American Sailing’s Sailor of the Month.

December 2023 Sailor of the Month: Howard Clayman

This month we were inspired by Howard Clayman’s story and he is our December 2023 Sailor of the Month. This story takes us to Herzliya, Israel, where Howard runs the Blue Wave-Tashoot Sailing Academy. It’s a unique Sailor of the Month story — we take a look at how current events have impacted the day-to-day, as well as, of course, talking sailing stories from weathering harrowing storms to racing in the Cowes Week regatta. We’ve spoken with Howard before, and we’re excited to catch back up with him and see that his sails are still full and new sailors are cruising the beautiful Mediterranean waters under his leadership every day.

Interactive Media Classes (Online Learning)

It’s no secret that the COVID-19 crisis has changed our lives forever, and the sailing world is no different. From closed marinas to social distancing on sailboats, ASA has begun to re-examine what the new normal will look like once we are all allowed to return to our daily routines. One thing that ASA did learn is that there is

  1. I’m starting a women’s sail club in our sail school this season and it will focus on how to sail and introduce some racing concepts. We have only 5 sessions that are 4 hours long. We will be on a J24.
Any suggestions for women sail focus groups from other women sailors out there? I teach the Basic Keelboat lessons on a reservoir out of Eugene, OR.
What experiences did you enjoy or can share? Not just racing.
My sailing school has had only male staff for the past 15 plus years, besides me, and I am trying to bring other adult females into the teaching realm.
    Thanks,
    Anne
