Featured School: Southern Most Sailing School

Keywest conjures up images of the Conch Republic, Jimmy Buffet, and tropical-tasting boat drinks.   The action on Duval street, the humidity, and the sweet smell of south Florida all paint a picture of a completely different kind of place.   This southernmost point in the USA is home to the Southern Most Sailing School where you can work on your sailing skills while working on your tan.

This month’s Featured School, Southern Most Sailing School, explained a bit about why sailing in Key West is second to none.

Where They Sail 

When you come to Key West to take your sailing classes you will be in a Tropical or subtropical area of Florida similar to the Bahamas where the water is the most beautiful color of blue and clear enough to see the bottom. This tropical vacation destination when combined with sailing is ideal. You will learn to sail while seeing dolphins, sea turtles, sea birds, and tropical fish in the warm clear waters. 

Our prevailing winds are from the southeast and we separate the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean with our narrow peninsula. This means we can get the benefit of the ocean breeze but not the big waves on the gulf side. When you are trying to learn how to sail you can concentrate on sailing and not being tossed around by 4 to 6-foot waves like you might be if you were sailing on the Atlantic Ocean side of Key West. 

Key West is a vacation destination as well with lots of great restaurants and bars and fun nightlife.  Many pubs feature live entertainment even during the week. 

You can fly directly into Key West airport and Southern Most Sailing will pick you up.  We can provide transportation to the grocery to get some provisions for your stay and then to the boat you’re staying in. Southern Most Sailing School is in a modern marina with floating docks, a ship store with coffee, snacks, beer, and wine, as well as restrooms and showers.  

What They Teach 

Southern Most Sailing School teaches ASA 101, ASA 103, ASA 104,  ASA 105, and ASA 118.

The area we teach in is protected from the high waves possible in the Atlantic and is actually on the Gulf of Mexico side of Key West. 

Their Program 

Our goal is to give the best education of sailing we can do in our time together and getting your study materials well in advance of your class dates really helps to get you prepared our class average score is 93% on the ASA 101 written exam. 

Southern Most Sailing School is Sun Set Marina in Sunny Key West.  A modern marina with floating docks and great amenities. 1.5 miles from the Key West Airport classes begin at 9 am and end at 4 pm so you can learn by day and explore Key West at night. We use a Hunter 26 with a tiller,  we think the perfect boat to begin with we teach on.
