\n\n[/cs_content_seo][cs_element_text _id=”50″ ][cs_content_seo]Learning fundamental techniques, and problem-solving approaches is essential. Also, understanding how to use anchor systems, docking lines, and fenders effectively reduces the risk of mistakes under pressure. Plus, having a clear docking or anchoring routine reduces uncertainty. Plan each step, from approach to securing lines or setting the anchor, and communicate effectively with your crew.
\n\n[/cs_content_seo][/cs_element_layout_div_2][cs_element_layout_div_2 _id=”51″ ][cs_element_text _id=”52″ ][cs_content_seo]Use Technology and Tools
\n\n[/cs_content_seo][cs_element_text _id=”53″ ][cs_content_seo]Modern tools like bow thrusters, docking cameras, and wind meters can simplify complex maneuvers. Understanding and using these aids effectively reduces the stress of manual operations and enhances your confidence in handling challenging situations.
\n\n[/cs_content_seo][/cs_element_layout_div_2][cs_element_layout_div_2 _id=”54″ ][cs_element_text _id=”55″ ][cs_content_seo]Communicate Clearly & Stay Calm
\n\n[/cs_content_seo][cs_element_text _id=”56″ ][cs_content_seo]Make sure your crew understands the process and you are able to communicate effectively during maneuvers. Staying calm and focused on the situation allows you to make quick decisions, and good communication minimizes confusion, ensuring a successful outcome.
\n\n[/cs_content_seo][/cs_element_layout_div_2][cs_element_layout_div_2 _id=”57″ ][cs_element_text _id=”58″ ][cs_content_seo]Practice Makes Perfect
\n\n[/cs_content_seo][cs_element_text _id=”59″ ][cs_content_seo]Many sailors, especially beginners, feel anxious due to limited practice. Repeated practice in calm, uncrowded areas builds confidence. Choose a quiet marina or open water to simulate docking and anchoring scenarios. Regular practice improves your ability to handle your boat in various conditions, reducing anxiety over time.

Teresa is the co-owner of Morse Alpha Expeditions, a coastal and offshore sail-training program in the Atlantic. She taught for sea programs such as Outward Bound, and has also been a Marine Science educator. Teresa lived aboard a 27ft boat and sailed the northern Atlantic solo for a few years. She has given inspiring talks, such as her 2011 TED talk or 2012 National Women’s Sailing Association Keynote Speaker Address. She is also a science journalist and podcast producer, and she writes for NPR, Buzzfeed, The Smithsonian, and more.
Ben Eriksen Carey holds a 200 Ton US Coast Guard Master’s License, and 500 ton Mate. He is co-owner of Morse Alpha Expeditions, a coastal and offshore sail-training program. He has worked aboard schooners, tugboats, sailing and motor yachts — as captain, mate, and even dishwasher. Ben has a long list of maritime certifications including safety, firefighting, medical, etc. He began his sea life as a clammer in Stonybrook Harbor, NY. Ben pursued a degree in Human Ecology from Connecticut College with a focus in marine biology. In 1992 Ben attended the Sea Education Association (SEA) program, which sparked his love for sailing. He lived aboard Elizabeth, his 28ft cutter, while chasing his girlfriend Teresa’s 27ft sloop, Daphne for several years. It worked, because now they are married. He is excited to teach cruising and sailing again this summer with Morse Alpha Expeditions.\n\n[/cs_content_seo][/cs_element_layout_div_2][cs_element_image _id=”69″ ][/cs_element_layout_div][/cs_element_layout_column][/cs_element_layout_row][/cs_element_section][cs_element_section _id=”70″ ][cs_element_layout_row _id=”71″ ][cs_element_layout_column _id=”72″ ][cs_element_raw_content _id=”73″ ][cs_content_seo]\n\n[/cs_content_seo][cs_element_headline _id=”74″ ][cs_content_seo]ONLINE CLASS REGISTRATION\n\nTuesday, February 4th, 2025
